Planning the shot

Getting a good shot isn't just about technique and equipment it's also about planning.

As a photographer based in Antwerp, Belgium i try to make some interesting shots of my hometown.  One of the popular shots is the skyline of Antwerp.  Since Antwerp is becoming a popular cruise destination we get visited by a number of big cruise ships during the summer season.   Most of the ships make daytime stops which makes it nearly impossible to get a nice evening shot of the skyline and a cruise ships.

Planning was key in making these shots.  I regularly check the cruise schedule and noticed that there are 2 overnight visits planned this year.  So i marked these dates in my calendar and checked social media to search for more details.  By doing so i knew that there was a firework show planned to celebrate a food festival on the MS Europe during their overnight stay in Antwerp.

Without this planning aspect i would just get a another boring skyline shot, with the right planning it was able to get these shots
